The more I drive the more it drives me....nuts! I almost dread it. I commute 22 miles one way every day for work. Every morning and evening I'm plagued with fighting interstate highway traffic. What really gets to me is that I try to drive with a safety margin between me and the car in front of me. About enough space for a car and a fuzz more. Other drivers constantly pull into this space, sometimes without signaling the lane change and unless I aggressively apply my brakes I'm going to be left with a safety margin of about the width of a slice of bread. Why do people do that? Isn't it nerve wracking to drive, constantly applying the brakes and gas every few seconds to keep from crashing into the guy in front of you?
AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
;D
I feel a little better getting that off my chest.

I feel your frustration, atomic. I don't drive, but as a passenger I've witnessed questionable driving. Those who weave in and out of traffic lanes like you describe don't seem to understand (or just don't care) that they're endangering other people's lives on the road.
What can be done about moron drivers? Not much, short of draconian measures under a totalitarian regime.
I do like the idea of the automated car that drives for you. I saw that on the Discovery channel. The car's sensors always keep it at a safe distance from the vehicle in front of it. I think they said Japan is already trying out prototypes on the road. Not saying the automated car is moron-proof, but the way I look at it, clueless drivers should be put on "probation" and forced to use such a vehicle.

Well if you believe futurists the transportation systems depicted in Minority Report and I ROBOT may solve much of what I routinely complain about. That is until the automated system decides that humans are a problem and forces every car across the country to drive into a wall all at the same time. :-)

LOL I hate driving too. I used to do a 100km daily round-trip commute to work and back on the busiest (and most dangerous) highway in Africa. I hated it. You don't know what dangerous unroadworthy driving is until you drive out here man, Roll on the day of personal transporters... --A

That is until the automated system decides that humans are a problem and forces every car across the country to drive into a wall all at the same time. :-) The freeway sequence in Minority Report was terrific! I really wouldn't mind a future transportation system like that in place. But, I doubt it would ever happen, at least not here in North America where the car is not just a car but an expression of individual identity. I don't think people will be surrendering that in favor of a faceless automated sedan anytime soon. So the cars in Minority Report may seem more sinister than seductive...which may have been the point of that sequence. Still, being in a car that can go vertical up the sides of buildings? That to me is just jaw-dropping stuff -- right up there with Tron's lightcycles.

Reminds me of an old short-story which revolves around the idea that, far in the future, nobody ever goes outdoors anymore. Then some kids transporter breaks down and he rediscovers the joys of the outdoor world...

I liked driving my Impala, my Camaro, and my Grand Prix. The other cars, not so much. And I hate driving to or from work for more than 5 miles.....rush hour sucks.

Yikes I haven't been that lucky since 1989 when I used to live within walking distance to my office. Since then I've been commuting 20 miles or more one way. 5 miles would be awesome!!! ;D
