Well today is my first day of work in an actual office in about a year. I'm excited to get back into the game and I feel as though a huge weight has been lifted from my shoulders. I now have to worry about learning, doing and keeping this job but that's better than being unemployed.
I will kind of miss doing pretty much what I want all day but most of the time I spent worrying about money.
Wahoo

Wow.
Day one wasn't all that cool.
The company's new office is an old building off of 301 near Langston's Used Auto Parts. Essentially it's 25 CAD and Data entry people all piled into one large room on lunchroom type tables and computers everywhere. Pretty much the worst CAD working environment I've ever encountered so day one was a real shock to the system. In addition I started with 2 other drafters and none of us have computers yet. On the other hand none of us know what the flip we're doing. It's all very different and will take time to learn however we're on a very steep learning curve and will be working 12 hour days so it's kind of a crash course. Putting in this amount of time we should be working with at least the basic skills we need in about a week's time. The company is working on a huge project in Canada and is 3 months behind so this looks and feels very much like a CAD cattle call job where after the company gets caught up they let half the drafters go of which I have no doubt I would be included. But on the other hand it could last a year and I can make some money in the time I have and keep looking for a permanent job. If I weren't so desperate to have a job I would have walked away from this gig but facts are facts, any job is a good job these days.
Day two begins shortly.

d**n. oh well, if one of the other drafters flame out, have them give me a call. And keep posting here; I'm pretty sure you're doing it for my benefit anyway, so I'm paying attention.

I will indeed keep you posted. It's very possible there could be an opening and I will give them your name immediately. Day three was a bit better and more productive though I have a long way to go. I hope day four shows more promise. Well today is my fist day of work in an actual office in about a year. I'm excited to get back into the game and I feel as though a huge weight has been lifted from my shoulders. Nearing the end of my third week. 12 hour days more difficult than I imagined but I'm adapting. Just found out we are working Saturday again. At least it's not boring, there is plenty to do. Only real problem is that I get about an hour to get things done at home in the evening before I have to get to bed. However I am very grateful to finally have a job.

No doubt about it. I was able to check my bank account this afternoon and see that my paycheck was pending. Once I saw what I've been working for these past three weeks it really helps motivate. I was like "Hell, give me 14 hours a day!". I won't feel that way come tomorrow at 5 or 6 pm with still time to go but that's just human nature. When the work dies down some and I'm getting comfortable again with a 40 hour work week I'll probably miss these days. The company I work for has office trailers coming which will greatly help the space situation. Right now there is about 20 of us all crammed in the same room. One visitor said it looked like an overcrowded high school classroom which is pretty accurate. Its just 5 rows of lunch room style tables with a sea of computers sitting on top of them. Each computer has dual monitors and each set of monitors touch the ones next to them so you don't have much table space to call your own. You can't sit for more than a couple of minutes without someone squeezing past and behind you for a number of reasons. The long hours will go by far more comfortably when we're all in our own cubicles with space to keep paperwork and personal items like sodas or snacks. I am hopeful that I can do a good enough job that they'll choose to keep me when the work is caught up. I'll breathe more easily on my 91st day with the company. I'm also poised to name drop when/if they have to let someone go or someone quits. I know there aren't a lot of jobs out there but considering the working conditions and the pay I don't think it would take all that much to motivate someone to try something better but as it stands this is the best gig in town. The end of my third week approaches. ;D

Finishing my fifth week and got my second paycheck. Things are getting easier or at least more familiar. So far so good.

Everything at the new job is becoming familiar and much easier as time passes. Just got another paycheck which is great. And on Monday we have a new group of CAD techs starting which is always interesting. We were the green recruits only a few weeks ago and now we all feel like the old vets. There is one new guy that I'm hoping will work out though I can't remember his name.

I'm not surprised; remembering the names of minions is very difficult. Anyway, my first day was less shocking than yours; though it's a bit intimidating to hear how much everybody loves the work you're doing, and knowing they'll be expecting the same from me. I liked my co-trainees Oliver and Tammy, but I'm afraid I'm horrible with names, which means there was no room in the old memory banks for the name of the guy who's training us. Also, someone put a set of drums in my car while I was in training; figures a drummer can't even remember which car is his.....why, I wouldn't be surprised at all if I were to find another kit there tomorrow.

I hope this helps. James is the name of the trainer. As for my rep at the office I had no idea how well I was doing until you told me what they thought at your interview. It always feels nice to hear you are doing a good job. I don't think you will have too much difficulty with the work so I'm. Glad you got a job with us. Yes there will be another, more complete drum set mysteriously left in your car tomorrow. And a laptop. Heh.

More complete would be good. Did you mean to put the Pearl snare & pedal with the Maxtone kit?

More complete would be good. Did you mean to put the Pearl snare & pedal with the Maxtone kit? The snare is included because Kyrstie actually liked the snare that came with the Maxtone better so we swapped. The pedal was a bonus as the guy selling me Kyrstie's Pearl kit had an extra and threw it in. The Tama set I'm bringing tomorrow will be as complete as I got it with at least some hardware, kick pedal, snare stand, hi hat stand and drum throne. It also will have the crappy cymbals but no cymbal stand. We replaced at least some of the heads so it's actually in better shape than when I got it.

Cool. I'll try to show up early as I'll be heading out to the Holiday Inn for more training, and this time I expect to take my car.
I wonder what Dave will think when he sees the kit in the living room......
